The unique operating structure of HotHouse Theatre is defined by the Artistic Directorate. Conceived to address the problems of regional isolation, it radically reshaped the processes and policies of regional theatre by replacing the traditional role of the Artistic Director. Together the members of the Directorate set the vision for the company, plan the artistic program, appoint artistic staff, and keep the company connected to the national theatre industry.
Its members are drawn primarily from Melbourne and Sydney and they meet together four times a year. In addition one member of the Artistic Directorate is appointed Project Artistic Director to assume responsibility for each project in the company's artistic program. Day to day implementation of the program is undertaken by the company's Artistic Manager.
From 1997 - 2001, the Artistic Directorate was comprised of twelve members, appointed on rolling three year terms. There is little doubt that they achieved the company's goals of broadening the HotHouse Theatre artistic network, reinvigorating the work of the company, attracting a broader range of creative and artistic input to the program and furthering the development of Regional Theatre.
In late 2001, the Artistic Directorate was streamlined to seven, allowing for a deeper level of involvement by its members and ensuring that HotHouse Theatre remains responsive and at the forefront of Australian Regional Theatre.
