About Generate

Generate Theatre Festival provides an opportunity for motivated, passionate and talented young performers in Years 8, 9, 10, and 11 to develop their skills as artists and technicians whilst giving them the opportunity to show work within the season of a professional theatre company, HotHouse Theatre.

Generate focuses on Playbuilding and Devising Theatre. Students are tasked with creating and rehearsing a 15 minute performance that they will ultimately perform in front of a live audience at HotHouse’s Butter Factory Theatre.

In order to begin the devising process, each school receives a mystery box. Inside is an assortment of stimuli including audio, images, text and objects. Students are required to use these items as a launching point for the generation of ideas, discussion and devising of their performance.

Generate Theatre Festival is not a competition, and there are no places or points awarded. Generate is about exploring a theatre making process with support from a professional theatre company and the opportunity to share that work with peers amongst the region’s schools community.
