More recognition for Cookie’s Table

Hot on the heels of Leah Purcell’s win at the Helpmann Awards for Best Female Actor in a play, playwright Wesley Enoch has been shortlisted for The Louis Esson Prize for Drama for The Story of the Miracles at Cookie’s Table.

Seen in our 2007 season in co-production with Griffin Theatre, the play was shortlisted for the prize – part of the Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards – on 8 August alongside Andrew Bovell’s When the Rain Stops Falling and Michael Gow’s Toy Symphony.

In announcing the shortlist the judges commented: “Wesley Enoch places us in the world of the domestic, then weaves a story that invokes the universal from the particular. At the heart of this play is the formidable and engaging Cookie, whose poetic vernacular and wry humour are a joy. From the stories of this one Indigenous family, broad questions of identity and belonging are raised.”

The nomination in Victoria follows Wesley’s earlier listing for the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards.

The winner will be announced at a presentation dinner on 1 September.
