Leah Purcell has won the award for Best Female Actor in a Play at Australia’s premiere national theatre awards recognising distinguished artistic achievement and excellence for her role in the HotHouse Theatre & Griffin Theatre co-production, The Story of the Miracles at Cookie’s Table.
Announced on July 28 at a glittering ceremony at the Lyric Theatre, Star City in Sydney and broadcast on Foxtel, Purcell beat out stiff competition to win at the 8th annual Helpmann Awards.
HotHouse Theatre’s Artistic Manager Campion Decent is thrilled for Purcell and pleased that HotHouse has once again gained national recognition for the quality of its work locally.
“I’m delighted that Leah has received this industry recognition because her performance in this play was truly remarkable,” he says.
Written by one of Australia’s leading indigenous writers and directors, Wesley Enoch and directed by one of our foremost directors, Marion Potts, Cookie’s Table was emotionally stirring yet full of wonderful humour, and a timely reflection on how an individual family can heal itself. The play opened in Sydney to critical acclaim before enjoying a season on the Border in September last year.
Reviews universally praised the exceptional performance of Leah Purcell as the heart of the play, with John McCallum in The Australian hailing it as “a superb performance”, Bryce Hallett in The Sydney Morning Herald writing the play “is blessed with Purcell, one of the most natural and charismatic performers in Australian theatre” and the Daily Telegraph’s Gary Smith saying “Leah Purcell delivers a startlingly powerful performance . . . for Purcell’s performance alone, Cookie’s Table is well worth seeing.”
This HotHouse Theatre commission was assisted by the Nelson Meers Foundation, Myer Foundation, Arts NSW, & the Besen Family Foundation.
