In 1999 HotHouse Theatre called for expressions of interest from playwrights to respond to the idea of "significant moments of the 20th Century". One of the best ideas came from Katherine Thomson. In the ensuing 3 years the Artistic Directorate, the company and a great number of artists have helped workshop, read, develop and generally support Katherine to bring us this extraordinary work, Wonderlands.
Native Title has been a divisive issue within our country. For many Non-Indigenous Australians there has been a fear that their homes and livelihood will be taken away from them. For many Indigenous Australians, including myself, Native Title pits family against family and forces us to codify our connection to our Land and prove our ‘continuous connection’ despite the fog of history. Add to this the conscious campaign of misinformation and there is no wonder Native Title brings out the best and worst in human nature.
HotHouse is not a company to shy away from the hard issues, in fact, dealing with the hard issues is one of our many roles. We are a national company based in Albury/Wodonga, creating plays on the national stage about characters and themes from regional Australia. These stories act as a metaphor for the whole nation. A play like Wonderlands goes to the very heart of our country and some of the unanswered questions that plague our connection to this Land.
