An outstanding new Australian play Embers will have it’s World Premiere at The Hume Building Society Butter Factory Theatre Wodonga on July 13. HotHouse commissioned this verbatim work from Sydney playwright Campion Decent to tell the stories of many local and district people caught up in the overwhelming bushfire events that hit the North East in January 2003.
Overnight on 7 and 8 January, in the year 2003, a dry storm ignited over 80 fires in Victoria’s northeast and Gippsland. From exhaustive interviews with residents of the region, Campion Decent has fashioned an extraordinary account of the fires; the heart-stopping tales of survival, the awe-inspiring courage and endurance of communities put to the test, the spine-chilling evocations of the wave of heat that roars through pristine valleys – and the mountains of sandwiches volunteers anxiously prepared. Gripping, lyrical, comically overwrought when it seems tragic, and deeply moving when all appears lost, Embers is the story of a fire – and the people who fought it.
As the original commissioning company HotHouse Theatre is proud to be joined as co-producer by Sydney Theatre Company, who will take the work to Sydney for five weeks after the Wodonga season, which will then be followed by a HotHouse Embers tour of north east fire affected towns.
Directed by renowned Sydney director Maeliosa Stafford, the cast includes well known local actor and comedian John Walker, as well as Tracy Mann (Sword of Honour, Sweet and Sour, Prisoner and Heartbreak High) and Annie Byron (last seen in HotHouse’s Wonderlands, as well as playing Uncle Harry’s second wife, Lou, in The Sullivans, and many guest roles on such programs as Stingers, All Saints, A Country Practice and GP).
