HotHouse Theatre today announced Corowa High School student Dale Carnie. 15, as the winner of the 2007 Biting Dog Theatre Festival poster competition.
Dale’s striking, colourful paper collage work will be used as the graphic image for the poster, programme, and advertising for the Festival which runs from June 13 – 22 this year, the tenth year of the Festival. Dale, a year 9 student, was excited to win. He was encouraged to enter by his teacher Pam Fredericks who has been running after school art classes until recently.
HotHouse Theatre’s Marketing Co-ordinator, Heather Broadfoot said that HotHouse was delighted with the quality of the 2007 entries. “We had a 27 entries this year, many of a very high standard, both created by hand in various media, and digitally. Our judge, Audray Banfield, former Albury Regional Art Gallery Director, had a difficult job. In the end this entry stood out because of its striking simplicity and eye catching use of design and colour and humour, making it ideal for the various uses required of a promotional image for a festival” Ms Broadfoot said.
Dale’s prize is a cheque for $100, a certificate, and a framed copy of the completed poster. Another aspect to the prize is the chance to be mentored by a graphic designer to turn the image into the festival’s poster, with the challenge of incorporating all required text, acknowledgements and logos.
Dale this week took up this opportunity and under the tuition of Wodonga graphic designer Julia Fin of Fin Design, learned graphic design techniques using the latest digital design packages.
Tickets will go on sale for the Festival from HotHouse Theatre on May 28.
