HotHouse Theatre Announces New Artistic Manager

Chair of HotHouse Theatre, Dr Bill Robbins today announced that theatre practitioner Campion Decent has been appointed the Company’s new Artistic Manager.

Campion is presently Literary Manager at Sydney Theatre Company.

In a career spanning 15 years he has been Artistic Director of Next Wave Festival, Festival Director for Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras, and Chair of the Australian National Playwrights’ Centre.

He has also held senior positions at State and Federal arts funding agencies, and is currently a member of the NSW Arts Advisory Council which advises the NSW Government on matters of arts policy.

Campion has had a long association with the Company as an Artistic Directorate member since 2003 and as the writer of the play Embers, commissioned by HotHouse Theatre and produced in 2006 with Sydney Theatre Company. Campion is currently in Albury Wodonga as Festival Director of HotHouse’s  Biting Dog Theatre Festival.

On announcing the appointment Chair Dr Bill Robbins said, “Campion has an intimate understanding of the Company and a commitment to developing relationships both in the community in which we are based and further afield. He brings to the Company an impressive range of networks which will see us consolidate our role as a theatre company of national significance. The Board is proud to attract such an experienced theatre practitioner to the region and we are confident that Campion and General Manager Bernadette Haldane will lead the company admirably as we deliver our exciting plans for 2008 and beyond.”

Campion, who will relocate from Sydney, is looking forward to joining the HotHouse team.  “I am thrilled to have this opportunity to deepen and extend my involvement with a company I greatly admire. I am indebted to outgoing Artistic Manager Charles Parkinson. He is handing onto me a company in great shape.”

HotHouse Theatre is widely regarded as the leading regional theatre company in Australia and produces works by Australia’s leading playwrights. The company facilitates A Month in the Country, a national creative development lab for theatre artists - the only one of its kind in Australia. HotHouse also tours nationally and has an extensive rural touring circuit.

Current Artistic Manager Charles Parkinson will leave the Company in early July to relocate to Tasmania.  Campion will commence duties on July 16.
