HotHouse is seeking applications for a Theatre Technician Trainee position commencing in 2019.

The traineeship is for a regionally based person with a keen interest and a basic understanding of theatre. It includes training in the delivery of the technical elements of theatre as well as venue and equipment maintenance.

HotHouse offers a two-year full-time technical traineeship which  leads to accreditation in Certificate III and IV in Live Production & Services and is delivered and assessed on the job.

In the first year, the trainee works toward Certificate III in Live Production and Services (CUA30413). In order to complete the qualification, the trainee must be assessed as competent in six core modules and nine elective models. The overall structure, delivery and assessment of training is flexible and holistic and is built around HotHouse’s schedules.

The offer of a contract for the second year of traineeship is dependent on successful completion of Certificate III and a performance review. In the second year the trainee will be expected to complete Certificate IV in Live Production and Technical Services (CUA40413).

Note: This is a formal traineeship therefore applicants with existing entertainment industry qualifications may be ineligible.

Wage: National Training Wage ($21,445 pa) plus Superannuation as per the Superannuation Guarantee Levy (currently 9.5%)

RTO: Arts Centre, Melbourne

Length of Contract: 1 Year with a 1 year extension dependent on successful completion of Certificate III Live Production & Services.

Hours of Work: On average a 38 hour week around the requirements of the production schedules.

  • A basic understanding of theatre protocols and practice;
  • Desire to build a career in technical theatre;
  • Demonstrated written and spoken communication;
  • Ability to undertake physical work including manual lifting and working at heights;
  • Ability to work proactively within a team;
  • Demonstrated strong attention to detail;
  • Willingness to build knowledge of safe work methods and practices; &
  • Demonstrated ability to work calmly in stressful situations and environments


  • Current drivers’ licence or readiness to acquire
